Mada is Saudi Arabia’s national payment scheme owned by the Saudi Central Bank (SAMA). It connects ATMs, point-of-sale (POS) terminals, and eCommerce platforms offered by local banks and licensed FinTechs across Saudi Arabia through a central payment switch, which routes transactions between the merchant’s bank or FinTech and the card issuer’s bank or FinTech. Mada also enables regional and global acceptance, giving cardholders wider acceptance locally and overseas.

A Mada Card is a  card issued by SIB that gives you direct access to the funds in your account. You can use it for ATM withdrawals, POS purchases, and online payments, with enhanced security and added features compared to older ATM cards.

You can use Mada at ATMs and POS terminals across Saudi Arabia. You can also use it regionally and internationally through connections with other payment networks such as GCC Net and international card schemes (for example Visa, Mastercard, and American Express), providing wider acceptance locally and overseas.

The Naqd service allows you to withdraw cash directly from participating POS terminals when you make a purchase. You can withdraw up to 400, which is deducted directly from your account along with the purchase amount with no ATM visit needed.

Your current SPAN card will be replaced, or a new Mada Card will be issued if you do not already have one. You can request a new Mada  card from SIB.

If you already provide the POS service you may contact your bank directly to upgrade it with Mada standards or to enquire on when the bank will approach you to do so. If you want to provide the service for the first time, you can choose to do so through any of the banks listed under the Merchants tab.

Yes. POS terminals displaying the Mada logo accept both SPAN and Mada cards.

The Merchant Service Agreement (MSA) is a mutually signed contract between the merchant and the bank that defines responsibilities, terms, and conditions related to the POS service provided.

POS reconciliation is the process merchants perform to ensure that all transactions processed during the day are correctly settled and deposited into their bank accounts. This process is typically performed daily, after the sales cycle is completed.

Merchant Service Providers (MSPs) are third-party entities appointed by merchants’ banks, in accordance with SAMA regulations, to provide POS-related services, including:

  • POS installation
  • Ongoing maintenance
  • Merchant technical support

Yes. POS services may be subject to fees, as outlined in the commercial contract signed between the bank and the merchant.

In line with global best practices, the interchange fee model allows acquiring banks to charge:

  • Up to 0.80% of the transaction value,
  • Capped at a maximum Merchant Service Charge (MSC) of per transaction.

No. Applying a surcharge to cardholders for POS payments is illegal.
